Social Aspects

How do you handle the social aspect – Do you go out with your husband’s friends? I can only imagine how hard it is because of background noises, dim lights, and lip-reading is exhausting!

Everyone I see on a daily basis are hearing. My friends, my husband’s friends, family, co-workers are all hearing. If there’s something I don’t understand, I’ll ask them to repeat it. Sometimes they have to write it down. No big deal. Most of the time, they’re pretty understanding.

Background noises and dim lights are another story. Yes-I do struggle in these environments. I prefer bright lights and quiet background noises. Let’s be honest, after a couple glasses of wine, I can be wild. Just kidding. On the other hand, it goes both ways, if you’re having a conversation at a loud bar, they’re likely to speak more clearly. Aka, move their lips way better than you just did at the grocery store. Yet, this can be different in a group conversation. I make sure and try to sit where I can see everyone. A lot of time, everyone talks at once and I do try to make sense of it. If they’re kind enough to let me know what that was all about, I’ll lend in my voice on that topic. Usually, one or more person has already said what I said and sometimes you want to crawl under a rock. But, brush that shit off.

I’m always tired of lip reading and especially speaking clearly. Clocking out after a 10 hour day and your mind done, pass the pillow please.

But luckily, everyone (most people) is very supportive and understanding. It is easier to be around other deaf people. It’s just how my life is.  You wake up and deal with the challenges faced every single day.

I’m so glad it’s a three day weekend! Anyone feels like there’s a million things to do yet you just want to sleep?
