My Journey With Stomach Issues: Part Three

This is still quite a journey.

If you have no clue what I’m talking about, please go back to Part One and Two.

After the last blog, I discovered more food that I may be sensitive to while eliminating most of the food on the list I tested for positive sensitivity from Part One.

One, my acne had gotten worse. It was more cystic than anything I’ve had before. When I suffered from chronic poor sleep, I was up at 1:30 – 3 am almost every night which is the liver/gall bladder time. I had done a gallbladder flush in the process and passed a ton of stones. That process entails drinking organic apple juice for 5 days which my liver wasn’t able to digest the sugar enzymes due to how inflamed it was in the beginning. The doctor put me on a few liver supplements to help with it because the acne location was centered around my chin and nose. And that stems from the liver according to my Esthetician and Chiropractor. As a massage therapist, learning Traditional Chinese Medicine has also taught me this as well. My liver had been chronically inflamed for some time due to my leaky gut.

My blood panels would show a healthy number but it definitely showed elsewhere. My face.

Two, I also learned leaky gut is what causes this. But I was in the process of healing it but why is my skin still having volcanic eruptions?

Research has taught me a few things. Lectins are proteins in some fruits and vegetables that can cause gut inflammation but are considered healthy foods by most people. I’ve been growing most of the “nightshades vegetables” which have lectins and not knowing those “healthy foods” were causing the stomach and skin issues I’ve been having. So that’s stopped. My skin has been slowly healing since then.

Speaking of the elimination diet, I’ll be doing this a few more weeks and slowly adding some of the eliminations back in one at a time to see what reaction I have. If there’s an obvious reaction, chances are it’s not good for me. Listen to your body! What affects me may not effect you.

What I’ve eliminated so far:

Eggs, dairy, gluten and pseudo gluten, cashews, pecans, nightshades including tomatoes, peppers, white potatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, whey, casein, and any beans including soy (which I never touch).

A lot of people have been telling me “You only live once. Stop worrying about it.” Exactly. I have only one life and plan to live it to the fullest. I can’t stand watching other people suffer and at the same time ignore their health but that’s their choice. I have always enjoyed life but will be able to enjoy it better. I am not worried either. It’s really more about taking the next step to bettering your health. Functional Medicine is really going to help me in the future.

The Stress of Hearing Loss

Lately, I’ve been having major writers block and decided to take time off from writing over memorial holiday weekend. Not only was May Mental Health Awareness Month but it got me thinking about the stress of being a deaf individual in today’s crazy world.

I get it. You must be like “How does this individual with hearing loss have stress?” “Can’t she just turn her hearing aids off?” “Why is stress involved?”

It’s extremely stressful. I was realizing just how much I needed a vacation again. How often I feel the need to have one. Whether it’s sand between my toes, the sound of waves, sightseeing the wonders of the world, get out of this rat race and really just go. Like “BYE FELICIA!”

There are situations involved where you’re under a ton of pressure. There’s embarrassment, sweat, tears, the oops, the uh ohs, the constant what if, and multiple anxious moments.

It really puts a toll on your body, both physically and mentally. It’s excruciating to really manage it, for your health and peace of mind.

Why this stress thing?

We’re limited. “Oh Amanda, can you call this patient for me?” (Crickets in background) Here’s another situation – Dentist with mask on “Ok mark it #5 MOD.” (When it really sounds muffled)…..And one more – When you’re trying to order food in an extremely loud restaurant and the waiter isn’t really moving his lip….shit it’s harder to have a nice night out with your husband too!

It’s the daily communication issues, the fear of missing something important, the embarrassment and blah. Blah blah. Not to mention the exhaustion your poor brain entails.

Like I explained in my last blog Easier to Identify as Deaf.

“Hearing aids are lifesaving technologies. They are there to help you hear better. If you’re a lip reader you may and will always still be a lip reader even with better hearing aids. Like I said it doesn’t cure.”

Since life is stressful that way, we still do our best even when no one understands. It’s called having empathy people.

Below is some of the things I do to cope. Now, everyone is different in their own ways.

1. Exercise

There’s a reason I continued my dance career all through college and NFL. Once retired, I found Crossfit. Now since we have a garage gym, I’m able to come home from work and de-stress by doing a workout or lifting.

2. Travel

It’s a wonder what it can do for me. Constantly bringing a smile to my face. I truly enjoy seeing the world, immerse myself within the diversity of cultures and learn what they have to offer. If only I could do this full time!

3. Mediate

Doing yoga or even reading a book you enjoy helps keep my mindset healthy. But honestly, I’m grateful for my three dogs. Best therapy ever.

4. Eat healthy

Nutrition plays a huge role on health. Being stressed can lead to overeating, weight gain, health issues. Not only it keeps you healthy but also nourishes your mind.

5. Plan ahead

Why would I plan ahead? The OCD in me like to stay on track and make sure everything is in order for situations to go as smooth as possible. Keep everything on a calendar. Get to work early. Get things done ahead of time.

One more thing I learned, it’s ok to ask for help. Keep in mind, You’re not doing anything wrong by asking for help. You are if you’re not asking for help.

I feared judgement. Past tense. Now I can say I’m a rockstar. PS: I still have my judgement days okay? I’m allowed to be human. A deaf one.

Just Strong

It’s a struggle when everyday society expects you to look a certain way. Let it be the media, being a professional athlete, dancer, or just in life. I’ve been seeing a lot of women on social media comparing themselves to others and it’s daunting!

Growing up, I always saw being skinny was perfection. Mind you, I was surrounded by professional dancers that had bones sticking out. I used to idolize that. I used to see that I needed to look like that. Be smaller.

Thanks to CrossFit, I found my way out of that hurdle and see food as fuel for your body and weights to keep me healthy. It makes me feel strong, capable, and has taught to appreciate and love my body in ways I never thought I could.

While I’m in a significantly better place, I still struggle and by no means am perfect or have it all figured out.

Today, people see muscles on women as gross, steroid looking, fat, too big, unhealthy, you name it. I’ve heard it all.

When is there going to be a day when women stop body shaming others instead but lift and bring each other up. Sadly, it’s an issue for women who are just naturally skinny as well.

I’m here to show that you’re not alone if you’ve struggled with body image or self love.

There’s no need to be perfect to inspire others. Let people be inspired by how you deal with your imperfections. Strength comes from within.

Have faith in your abilities. Self-realization and success comes from having confidence. Believe in yourself. You are stronger than you think you are. Stay humble.
